Biography

Julian R. Wagner began his creative journey as a photographer before studying art and design at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy and Production Design at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where he received a scholarship for a masterclass workshop at UCLA. His international feature debut, Color of The Ocean, earned him the Förderpreis Deutscher Film for Outstanding Artistic Achievement, marking the beginning of his career as a Production Designer.

Since then, Wagner has worked internationally across a wide variety of genres. His credits include Stefan Schaller’s award-winning drama Five Years, Lennart Ruff’s science-fiction feature The Titan, and Tim Fehlbaum’s The Colony (aka Tides), for which he received the 2021 German Film Award for Best Production Design. His television work includes the Netflix series Tribes of Europa and the international series The Swarm, produced by Game of Thrones executive producer Frank Doelger.

Wagner reunited with Tim Fehlbaum for the historical feature September 5, further showcasing his skill in creating distinctive, visually rich environments rooted in story and period. His work on the film earned him his second German Film Award for Best Production Design in 2025.

He then returned to science fiction with Takashi Doscher’s Karoshi for Lionsgate. Most recently, Wagner completed Christian Schwochow’s historical series Hamburg Days, an atmospheric portrait of the Beatles’ formative years in Hamburg.

In 2025, Wagner was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
